Shout-out: Sungyoon Choi

SUNGYOON CHOI!

Sungyoon Choi is an illustrator and a comic book artist living in Brooklyn, New York. She studied illustration at School of Visual Arts MFA program. In 2008 she illustrated the graphic novel “American Widow” for Villard press. Currently she's working on two other new graphic novels which will come out next year. Sungyoon also teaches “the Art of the Graphic Novel” at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Editor's note: Choi is yet another of the fantastically talented folks I met through freelancing at JWT. She's also a key component of the Rabid Rabbit anthology series (Lead Designer, to be precise) and a teacher of cartooning at SVA here in NYC. 

Edward Gorey House!

A friend of ours was working in Cape Cod, so she graciously invited us to share her (comped) hotel room. Another friend in D.C. drove up and picked us up from Brooklyn. We've been talking about taking a last child-free vacation before the little lady makes her triumphant appearance, so this was the perfect opportunity.

I figured it would be a nice few days hanging out on the beach, but upon browsing through the free tourist-bureau pamphlets littering the hotel lobby I was thrilled to find illustrator-extraordinaire Edward Gorey's house a stone's throw away! After he passed away in 2002, his house was converted into a museum displaying his sketches, original drawings, nick-nacks, cat graveyard, etc.

I can't tell you how much I love Gorey's work, but suffice it to say, I was stoked. Karen gave me a book collecting Gorey interviews on my birthday, so I'm once again steeped in admiration and awe for the man. Viva Edward Gorey!

Shout Out: Adam Kidder

I've been intending on adding a links list to highlight some of my wonderfully talented buddies (& non-buddies) out there, but the sheer number makes the prospect somewhat intimidating. So, I think I'll just do individual shout-out posts every so often and add a link simultaneously.

The premier shout-out goes to Mr. Adam Kidder, illustrator & comic-drawer extraordinaire. Being the crotchety old man I now am I'm no longer excited about going to parties, but when I see Adam there I know I'll be sufficiently entertained. I am sad to say that I don't have too many art-friends close at hand anymore to talk shop with anymore, so I enjoy the chance to occasionally nerd out with him. As for his work, definitely check it out. I'm jealous of how animated his characters are (although it was suggested to me recently that the subject matter I gravitate toward in my own comics should be less animated) and of his ability to create non-cheesy caricatures of famous people.
